From my “Mother Earth” body paint...

ileadaninterestinglife:

From my “Mother Earth” body paint series with Emma Farrell

This is me at 37 weeks (currently 38)

Most of the body paint had to be done with me lying down because I kept getting light headed. Probably about the 3rd body paint job I did while pregnant.

Body art is an extremely exhausting experience for both the model and the MUA. If you’re going to model for body paint make sure to keep a drink and small snacks near by, if you’re standing for a long time (even if you’re not pregnant) you will start to get a bit woozy. You’ll also be in your undies so your body temp will plummet. If you need to move yourself about just give the MUA a heads up, more than likely she could also do with a break and won’t mind pausing for a bit.

You need to be confident and comfortable with the MUA/Photog/Audience to do a body paint. It’s a hard days work and you will be essentially in the nip or just undies so if the idea of that freaks you out don’t put yourself forward for body art work.

ileadaninterestinglife:

Have at least 2 body painting sessions...

ileadaninterestinglife:

Have at least 2 body painting sessions coming up before D-Day.

One with MUA Emma Farrell (previous work with Emma above) and another with MUA Marie Viktoria (previous work with Marie is avatar)

Am also planning on heading back to TIMA for round 2 of the ultrasound baby bump body paint :)

So if you like pregnant women being body painted watch this space cause you’re gonna love what I’ve got in store!

One of my favourite make-up artists Mel Arter has just been signed as one of Max Factor’s Brand Ambassadors. She will be joining another two of my make-up heroes Pat McGrath and Caroline Barnes.

Max Factor chose Mel because of her vast experience in the Beauty and Fashion Industry. Her work can be seen in the top fashion magazines around the world from Vogue to Dazed & Confused. She has keyed many fashion shows over the years including Basso & Brooke, Mulberry and Acne. She also has a whole list as long as my arm, of famous faces that she has worked with including the late Amy Winehouse, Beth Ditto, Helena Christensen and Naomi Campbell to name a few.

From the many interviews that I have read with Mel, what really comes across is that she is a warm, fun person and doesn’t take herself to seiously. Her personal mantra is “If you don’t like it don’t do it!” which I think is a great way of thinking!

A very sad day for the world of fashion. Anna Piaggi has died at the age of 81. The flamboyant fashionista, did things with her own unique style and charisma. She was an exciting character and always wore layer upon layer of richly patterned and textured clothes and hats. Friends with many of the biggest influencers in fashion like Franca Sozzani, Karl Lagerfeld, and Manolo Blahnik, this lady was in good company. She contributed to countless magazines including Vogue Italia, La Settimana Incom, Epoca, Linea Italiana, Annabella, Panorama, L’Espresso and Arianna. She always had her finger on the pulse of what was hot in fashion and could often be found in the front row of all the biggest shows.

Her penchant for layering clothes with different colours and patterns all mixed together was one thing, but what I loved the most was her unique blue hair and over the top make-up. She wore her signature style with aplomb even in to her eighties! This is exactly how I hope to be, still wearing make-up and having a bit of style even as I age, some might call it ageing disgracefully, but not me…I love it! RIP Anna Piaggi the style icon.

As a professional make-up artist I have pretty much tried most products and make-up out there, but when it comes to my own make-up I actually like to keep it very simple. The products above are what you can usually find me wearing on a daily basis, so actually not all that much.

This summer I have been mainly rocking a fresh glowing look. The reason being, even if there is no sunshine, I am going to bloody well exude light!! So to get said glow, I reach for my YSL Touche Éclat Foundation. This is a relative newby to the block and I have to say I love it! This is one of the very few foundations that I have actually bought for myself this year. I am usually sent alot of products to try for the blog and my beauty writing, so I often end up trying out lots of different foundations and go from one to the other. I was working when they did the launch for this bad boy, but I went down to Brown Thomas for my complimentary 7-Day sample (which is available to everyone by the way, so just ask!). I tried it out for a few days and got lots of compliments, so I knew I was on to a winner.

So I headed back to BT’s to buy the full size and of course I forgot to bring the sample with me. I had already been colour matched and it was perfect for me. All I could remember was that I was a B something and I thought it might be B20, but I wasn’t sure. I know what a bad memory I have so I thought it would be better that I book in for a make-over and get colour matched again, just to be sure so I could definitely get the correct colour. Plus I was meeting friends later and wasn’t going to have time to go home. Well what a mistake that was. The lady that I was booked in with was really nice person and I feel bad even writing this, but she clearly didn’t have a great knowledge of the products that she was using. She piled on some serum that they were promoting, which felt really heavy on my skin, when the foundation went to top of this, it actually congealed on my face. She was happy to leave it like that, I had to ask her to please take it off as I had lumps of congealed foundation on my face. I got her to re-apply the foundation without the serum and then it was fine. She went on to finish off the make-up, keeping it really natural. I found that overall the make-up application was a bit messy and unpolished. It is hard to say, perhaps if I was a normal customer I would have been happy. Anyway long story short I went home to discover that I looked really pale. I had a look at the sample I had and it was a B40 and the colour I had just bought was a B20. So now I had a new foundation for the kit! I didn’t realise in BTs because the lighting is so bad, you can’t really tell colours properly, which is really frustrating and must be so hard for the make-up artists to do their work properly! I eventually managed to get back into town and get the right colour for me and this is what I use as part of my everyday look. Phew! A bit long-winded there :-).

Under my eyes I use a mixture of the MAC Moisture cover undereye concealer and the Benefit Highbeam, to really brighten it up. I don’t have alot of Benefit products in my professional kit, but I like them personally because of the pretty packaging and the funny names…not a great reason to buy make-up I know, but I am a girl after all!

[caption id=”attachment_3664” align=”aligncenter” width=”500”] Image Courtesy of Temptalia.com[/caption]

I love this Posietint cheek stain by Benefit, it gives me a very soft flush of colour to the cheaks and really lasts. If I am feeling like being a bit more dramatic I will sometimes layer up some Coralista blusher over this. I have kind of gone off powders for the summer, preferring to just set my foundation and blusher with a light wash of translucent powder from Mineral Hygienics. It doesn’t give a matt finish, still allowing the luminosity to show through which I love.

I then fill in my brows using a mix of the browns from this Models Own eyeshadow palette. I find that it is too loose and messy to use as an eyeshadow, but it is great for adding definition and colour to my brows, which I have to do every day, even when I am pairing back my make-up. I then put on a lick of Maybelline Falsies mascara top and bottom and I am good to go!

Pretty low maintenance for a make-up artist ay? What is your daily make-up routine? Would you wear alot of make-up or are you no fuss? Do you find it hard to get the correct colour foundation? I would love to hear about other people’s experiences when shopping for make-up.

All the best,

Emma xx

I know you probably thought I was going to do an Olympic Inspired tutorial or something. Sorry to disappoint :-)

I got to work on the video above recently, it didn’t take much, just some male grooming and basic film/tv makeup. I do love my work as I get to meet such a variety of people in the job. Jason is a very inspiring person and very fast!! I wish him all the best in the Olympics

About Jason:
Visually impaired sprinter Jason Smyth achieved fame at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games when he won the 100m (10.62) and 200m (21.4 3) T13 races in world record times. He fully merits his nickname of “The Fastest Paralympian on Earth”.
The Derry man is based in Florida and trains with US sprint king Tyson Gay, a former world champion and owner of the second fastest 100m of all-time. Gay describes Jason as “one of the most technically gifted sprinters alive”.
Jason’s success in Beijing was no surprise as two years earlier he had won gold in the 100m (10.86) and 200m (21.83) at the 2006 IPC Athletics World Championships in the Netherlands. A back injury ruled him out of the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in New Zealand, but he, together with fellow Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, competed at 2011’s IAAF World Championships in Korea.
Jason achieved the Olympic “B” standard time for 100m (10.22 seconds) but fell just short of the “A” standard of 10.18 – this would have made him the first track athlete to compete at both Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Jason is now focused on retaining his Paralympic 100m and 200m titles. The International Paralympic Committee have marked him as one to watch at the Games – he’ll have high hopes of glory in London’s Olympic Stadium.

I arrived a little bit tired, because the night before I was at a cast and crew screening of a film that I was Make-up Designer for (more to come of that later).

I was introduced to my lovely consultant Lindsay who promptly set about cleansing my face. She took my make-up off with the gentle camomile eye-makeup remover, which I have to say was gorgeous on the skin. I can be a little bit sensitive around the eyes and this was actually lovely and refreshing, no sting at all. I am raging, as I was given a bottle of this recently on a course in London, but I actually gave it to my taxi driver (along with a whole host of other makeup) because I couldn’t fit it in my bag for the flight. The stitching at the seems of my bag were under so much pressure they had started to split and I didn’t want my whole bag to burst on the conveyor belt.

She cleansed, toned and moisturised my skin with the whole Vitamin E product range, which is so lovely on the skin. It is a creamy consistency and helps to boost the skin with antioxidants bringing it back to its optimum moisture level.

Then Lindsay applied the Warming Mineral Mask which is suitable for all skin types and warms on contact with wet skin. I was surprised at how hot this got, it really felt like like she had put a steaming hot cloth on my face. It was really pleasant feeling and when she took the mask off I really felt like my skin had a very deep clean.

The mask was taken off with a facial buffer, something I had not used before. It helps remove dead skin cells and stimulates skin microcirculation. I genuinely felt like my skin had just had a strong session of microdermabrasion after this facial, except without the redness! My skin looked glowing and refreshed.

After the facial was completed Lindsay then offered to give me a mini makeover. I had already mentioned that I am a professional make-up artist, but she wasn’t fazed by this. We decided to go for something a little different and opted for some purples and blues. She used some of the shimmer cubes, which I am already a great fan of and paired this with a purple liquid liner. Excuse the silly photograph, I was trying to show the eyes :-)

All the best

Emma xx

Well the pictures have just been released. We were so lucky the day we were shooting this, it was an absolute stunner of a day and the sun was splitting the rocks. I guess it proves that we do get nice days in Ireland but it does feel sometimes like they are few and far between! I absolutely love the african prints with wild zebras drinking water, you only notice it if you look closely :-)

Nice hair! Well I know thank you! Wish I could say I did this myself, but it is all the handywork of Salon Zeba. I was invited in recently to experience their services, and what a nice treat it was. I was told that my hair has a split personality so to speak. Oily roots and dry broken ends, just great! Well fear not because there is a solution..my stylist prescribed Kérastase Specifique balancing shampoo for oily roots and sensitised lengths. She also gave me a conditioning treatment on the ends.

You can see my before picture, I had my hair hidden in a bun!

I was pretty impressed with the salon set up. It is a nice bright airy space with lots of stations, they even have a second space upstairs for when it gets really busy that nearly doubles the capacity! Usually I dread the basin, but I was amazed when I sat down and next thing I knew the chair magically moved and I was lying flat out. Which made the experience more like lying in bed, I had to concentrate really hard while I was getting my treatment done that I wouldn’t fall asleep! I am sure that these mechanical beds have been around for a while now, but I normally get my hair done in my house these days by one of my hair dresser friends so haven’t seen the inside of a salon in a while…

I opted for a curly blow dry in the end, with not too much volume. I can’t believe how long my hair has gotten! It is very seldom you get to see your hair from the back like this, I should definitely get a cut. I have to say I really enjoyed my experience and I was kindly given some goodies to try at home. I will do a post on that at a later stage. I will definitely be heading back the next time I have a night out.

A little bit of a delayed posting on this shoot really seeing as it took place back in March. I was asked to do the make-up for a Superquinn shoot for the launch of their French Wine & Food Sale which is took place across all their stores from March 28th for three weeks.

To celebrate the launch, Superquinn flew the Michelin award-winning French chef Jean Christophe Novelli over, who had created French themed recipes for them which were all based on local Irish produce.

I was brought in to do his makeup and make sure that when things got a bit hot in the kitchen everyone looked cool!

It was a really quick and fun shoot, I always wondered how they got all those flames on tv…all you need is some oil, a gas cooker and a french man!

I did a shoot the other day and it was an absolute fabulous day, so excuse the poor quality of the pictures, but my phone camera just couldn’t handle the sunshine! I will share the finished photos when they are released. Amber was the model and she is so gorgeous already, we wanted to keep the make-up really simple. As there was alot of skin on show I made sure to really hydrate the skin. I usually use Body Shop’s Strawberry Body Butter, but I recently picked up some in M&S when I was in there recently. I am a huge fan of their tights and salads, a weird combo I know! Well now I can add their body butters to that list too.

On Amber’s face I also really hydrated her skin, but this time with Clinique’s Moisture Surge for Normal/Combination Skin. I love how lightweight and readily absorbed this moisturiser is. Skin just drinks it up and it quenches any thirst meaning it is perfectly prepped for the foundation. She has such great skin with the most beautiful freckles. I lightly evened out her skin tone with MAC Face and Body which created a thin veil allowing her sunkissed skin to glow through.

For the eyes, I lightly buffed a light peach eyeshadow called Samoa Silk into the contour of the eye and slightly shimmery cream colour called Dazzlelight to soften the edges, both from MAC.

I then lined the eyes with Estee Lauder’s Double Wear stay in place eye pencil in Chocolate which was smudged out and softened. I used my much loved Eyelure 020 False Eyelashes and applied lashings of Lancôme’s Hypnôse Mascara, which is simply THE BEST mascara on the market.

I warmed up her cheeks and décolletage with the Terre Saharienne Collecter bronzer from YSL, the texture is soft and silky. It contains a polymer that works with the skin and helps maintain its moisture level. It also has this gorgeous snake skin print engraved which I nearly wanted to preserve!

To complete the look I used a little Hush Liptar from OCC Cosmetics dabbed on with my finger to keep it soft and subtle.

We had a great days shoot, we were absolutely blessed with the weather. It rained so hard all night that it actually kept me away all night. The day of the shoot wasn’t the best, but as soon as we got to the Farmleigh to shoot, the clouds parted and we were basked in sunshine! Happy days, no need for the wellies that I packed.

In my experience on the various photoshoots I have done the hair and makeup, I have noticed that there is a real disparity in the quality of hair extensions out there. I found that there are three main flaws.

1.) Bad application:
You know the type, where you know instantly that they are fake because you can either see the beading or metal clasps!
2.) Bad colour match:
When there is a tell tale colour difference.
3.) Bad hair:
Where poor quality cheap hair has been used and it just makes the hair look unhealthy and unsightly. I even had one case where the girl thought that she had real hair, but when I went to style it with the curling wand it actually melted!!

So I just thought that I would share a fantastic company that I discovered recently that specialise in the highest quality hair extensions and wigs. Hairweavon is an Irish company owned by Yinka Rahman. Being of African origin, Yinka knows how important wigs and extensions are to African women – but she quickly discovered that women of every nationality love to have fun with their style and that there is a huge demand for wigs and hair extensions. Hairweavon only use real, ethically sourced hair and the HairWeavon team travels to the source to ensure that all hair is of the finest quality.

Not only do they supply the everyday consumer like me, they also provide wigs for those experiencing hair loss for health reasons, from Alopicia to Cancer. To put their clients at ease they even offer a home fittings so that you can get your hair sorted in comfort.

As they make the wigs and hair extensions to order, they also provide a tailor made service for film, television and theatre. Wish I had known this when I was working on a few of my television shows at it would have saved alot of time and pressure traipsing around the shops…eventually having to rent the wig from the UK for huge expense.

I was asked to do a last minute old age makeup for a short film called Cnoc An Oir recently. The brief was that the main characters should look 75 years old. Usually for a look like this you would have some lead time to design the makeup from scratch. I would probably have lifecast their heads and custom made silicone prosthetics. On this occasion I had half a day to prepare for the job, so literally had to come up with a design that I could do from my basic kit. I would have liked to do something more complicated, but I was working on something else at the time and of course being in Ireland couldn’t even order in any supplies as they would get here in at least a days time…too late.

I thought that the best way to age a man is to make him bald. I had an old loose bald cap in my kit that I am not sure where it came from. It was waaaay too big, so myself and my assistant Elaine had to alter it to custom fit is to his head. With a bit of crêpe hair, my trusted Skin Illustrator palette and some latex I think we did a great job of creating a realistic old age makeup.

What do you think? Have you tried to do an old age makeup like this before?

If you browse the internet at all you are sure to have seen adverts for a brand called Mineral Hygienics all over the place. They seem to have banner adverts and button ads all over my favourite beauty blogs and websites. I was never a fan of Mineral Foundations, having tried them out back in 2005 when the first started making waves in the beauty world. I was highly unimpressed with the cakey, chalkey feeling of them. Anyway, I started using the Mineral Hygienics to see if anything had changed since then.

But first, I thought it would be interesting to give it to a friend of mine to road test too. Two opinions is better than one! Celine Marrec has a blog about healthy living and eating, you should check it out here: http://celinemarrec.com/. She is a guru on organic fruit and veg, holistic living and so on, so I thought she would be the perfect candidate for a mineral foundation.

Here is what Celine had to say:
“I don’t have much experience with foundation as I have been using the Inika mineral one for the last 5 years but I quite like Mineral Hygienics. It is easy apply on the face, not shiny and has a great texture as well as the perfect shade for my light complexion. Best of all it lasts the whole working day which is really important.”

I personally found that this foundation was fantastic at covering my uneven skin and when used in conjunction with their setting powder it felt lovely and had a slightly dewy finish, but in a good healthy glow kind of way. Like Celine I thought that the colour range was excellent, they have alot of shades that would be well suited to Irish skin, I went for Fair and Celine used Fairest.

The great thing about this foundation is that it is truly organic and only has four simple ingredients. As it contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide it offers natural, broad-spectrum sun protection effectively blocking harmful UVA and UVB rays. Also for those of you that suffer from spots, the formula is non-acnegenic/non-comedogenic so it won’t clog pores or create problems with your skin, thus allowing for a flawlessly smooth complexion. It is so natural that it can even be used after skin treatments like microdermabrasion etc

You can get your own foundation kit and try it for yourself here:
